Well done on a splendid project. Its a long time, over 50 years
, since I last flew a Meteor (T7) but it brought back a few memories.
perhaps we will se it fly in the UK alongside Colin Straus’s F8
Many seasoned Meteor pilots cosidered the 8 the very best of the Meteors !
The model looks as good !

Lovely model 👍🏻

Keep the pics and videos coming as and when you fly it.

David Gladwin, I am looking forward to seeing Colin’s fly next year.

Also very jealous you have flown a Meteor. It’s a dream for me to do that. But I will put up with second best for now and keep flying my biz jet.

David Gladwin
Thanks, most building credits are for Frank the starter of this thread, I only took over the project.
Have made about 15 flights with it and it flies great.

Don`t think I will fly in the UK but who knows....

Very nice to hear that you have flown the T7, Phantasy In Blue has made the F4 because that was flown in the Netherlands.

paul_h300
Thanks, still loving it more.

@ weeks ago we had a Phantasy In Blue meeting/trainings day on a grass field.
First time for me that I have flown the Meteor outside my home base.

Had 3 great flights, but last landing I made it a little to slow and during levelling off for a greaser it fell out of the sky from about 10/15cm high.
Ripped my main gears off again.

But no worries, within 3 days it was fixed again.

Mhhh, see my last post missed the pictures....

Plan is to replace the engines for a somewhat smaller version.
The P80`s have plenty of power, but I have a little weight issue.
So I want to make it lighter.

With 2x a K70 I can bring the weight down about 3kg`s.

And I still am thinking of building a second one now I know the weakness of this version.

Pictures are fantastic. It look great in the air.

Is the other airframe you have an F4 or is it a later mk?

I think that’s a good idea with the engines and saving weight, turbine technology has moved on alot.

I have just replaced a Jetcat P60 with a Xicoy X60 in my Supermarine Swift and I have saved 762g.

David Gladwin No, because the model is flown for a founding and the Netherlands only have flown with the Mk 4 it will be a Mk 4.

paul_h300 No a Mk 4.
And yes, turbines technology is a lot better these days, I also like the restart function of the Kingtechs, never needed it on my models but with this twin it maybe can save the model.

You might be interested in a book I have just purchased. Its “Meteor, Eject” by Nick Carter. Memoirs of a Meteor pilot during the ‘50s.
It also lists all RAF Meteor losses, 890 aircraft and 444 pilots and navs. Sobering, glad I didnt fly it much !

That book sounds interesting. I am going to have a look for it.

The losses of the early jets were high. It’s a shame we can’t go back in time and provide better training to the pilots and see what the difference would have been in loss rate.

Coming from big piston engines onto the early jets with slow throttle response, quiet smooth engines and higher speeds must have been a hell of a learning curve.

I fly corporate jets and I know the transition from a relatively docile multi engine piston flying at 120kts in the cruise to my first jet which still was accelerating towards V1 on the runway at 120kts was very noticeable!

David Gladwin - do you attend any of the JMA events in the UK? I am planning on coming next year with my Swift and Hunter and I would love to hear about flying the Meteor.

Sounds like in 'interesting' book, will look it up.

The weather here is turned into less flying so I started with converting this Meteor to save some weight.
Goal is to go from 27kg start weight to about 24kg, I think that can be achieved but we will see.

Started with taking my Kingtech K70 G2 out of my Eurofighter (a second one will be bought in about 3 weeks I guess):

Also removed the LH turbine etc. from the Meteor:

And the difference in size and location, plan to place the K70 as far as much possible in de nose:

And the weight difference between a P80 set incl. UAT and pipe with the K70 incl. mini trap and pipe is +/- 750 grams.
So only with the turbines swap I will save about 1500grams.

There the K70`s use less fuel I also will take less fuel with me, will go from 5 to 4ltr, also less fuel in the UAT will save me a total of 1000 grams.

This is 2500grams in total and I think I can reduce more weight so 3kg less than it was is the goal.

That's progressing well. Looking forward to the flight tests when you're finished.

The weight saving will certainly make a difference, 3kg is quite a lot. Keep up the good work.

Won't you be loosing some thrust with a long exhaust tube?

There is maybe a small loss in thrust, how many? Don`t know making a test stand and measure it is a possibility.
But I think it will be minimal.

We used this 75cm long thrust tube in a F-86 I made it 10cm longer.

The Meteor is almost finished again, have placed it on the scales last evening en the weight loss with empty tanks is almost 2000 gram.
With 4ltr fuel the model will be 3000grams lighter then it was.

Empty the planes weights just under the 21kg, with fuel just under the 24kg.

Very happy with this result.

And I think I can get the model under the 20kg, but that will be for the next version I think.

Looking good. Can't wait to hear how it flies at the new lighter weight.

I am re designing the interior of my workshop and adding another bench which will be where my Meteor will be built. I don't have the space at the moment to start it.

I am also curious how it will perform.

Last things to do on the wing before the turbines will be installed:

Season is coming so did some more touch ups on the fuselage.

What is left now is installing the nose gear, check the CG and let the turbines run in the model for the first time.

Have done a lot since last post and the Meteor is ready again for the first flight with the Kingtech K70`s.

Adjusting turbines and pipes:

Installed nose landing gear and weight:

Build up and testing systems:

Weight check:

First run and some taxi test with the 2 Kingtech K70`s:

Empty weight:

Weight with 4 liters of fuel, this will be my flying weight:

Weight with 5 liters of fuel, with the JetCat P80 the flying weight was just over 27 kg:

So the model is 3 kg lighter with the K70`s then with the P80`s will see what that does to the flying behavior.
